Yeah I know, I’m late to the party. Story of my life…actually that’s not entirely true. I’m actually never late for anything. In fact I’m usually at least 15 minutes early. If I AM late to something, there must be a really good reason. However, I am almost always the last one to know about everything. The One Room Challenge is a perfect example of this. I’m pretty new to this whole blogging thing, but like everyone else I’ve seen the ORC mentioned all over Pinterest the last few years, but I thought it was just a term that everyone used when they were making over a room. I had no idea it was an actual THING! Yeah I’m a little slow.
Well I’m here now, and I am so excited to join so many other (far more talented) bloggers and DIYers in this 6 week journey. You can check out all the rooms and bloggers here. So much inspiration in one place!
It was pretty easy for me to choose a room to makeover. My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago and we were both ready for her to have a “big girl room.” Her room has never really been “done” anyway. Here is the one picture I have of her room from when she was a baby. It’s so…blah. I loved the colors but it had no personality.
Mak is pretty spunky so I wanted to give her something that matched her personality. I found a few rooms for inspiration…
And here’s a mood board I created…

But my main inspiration is this quilt. My mom bought it several years ago from Target and I told her then that I eventually wanted to use it for Mak’s room. So when her birthday rolled around this year I told my mom she was going to have to go shopping for a new quilt! HA! But seriously, how gorgeous is it?
Unfortunately they don’t sell it anymore so I can’t get the matching shams. Sniff, sniff. I think I can still make it work though.
I already have several of the items from the mood board. (They’ve been hiding in the closet.) So here’s my plan for the next 5 weeks.
- Paint her existing antique dresser hot pink and the hardware gold
- I also have a large antique mirror that I’ll paint gold
- Update hardware on daybed (something a little more girly)
- Build some book shelves from old kitchen drawers
- Paint the walls a light mint color (if I can find the right color)
- Arrange art work, decor, and mirrors on wall above bed
Whew! That’s a lot to do. I also want to do some type of new flooring, (we have clear coated concrete floors throughout our home because we were too cheap to paint them when we built it.) but I just can’t find anything that I love that won’t blow my budget. That one may have to wait.
I think that about covers it. I am so excited to get started on this project that I’ve been putting off for far too long. I’m even more excited to be finished. I hope you’ll follow along with my ORC along with all the other talented designers that participating this year. Thanks for stopping by, see ya next week!
